The high-tech industry had everything to offer them but they wanted to follow their vivid dream of making ales and lagers good enough for the world to drink. It was something neither the high-tech industry nor their lucrative jobs in the industry could fulfil and it was then that Steve and Leslie Kaczeus decided to quit their jobs and embark on a rollercoaster journey that brought Bootstrap Brewing into the world. 

Steve, a mechanical engineer and program manager was always a homebrewer before he took up the hobby as a profession and completed a course from the American Brewers Guild in 2011. Leslie was into marketing and it is something she still does for Bootstrap Brewing. Together, they dreamed of making excellent beer that would have people coming back for more. A passionate selection of ales and lagers, seltzers and non-alcoholic drinks have been added to the Bootstrap Brewing family over the years.

At the 2020 USA Beer Ratings, Bootstrap Brewing’s beers had a field day as five of their beers won medals based on their fantastic quality, value and packaging. 

Wreak Havoc: Gluten reduced and a massively hopped red ale, Wreak Havoc scored a massive 92 points at the competition and a resultant gold medal. The perfect mix of malts along with an addition of seven hops gives this beer a unique flavour and aroma. At the mouth, it is smooth and delicious and sets you in the mood for songs like Thunderstruck, Riders on the storm playing in the background. 

Insane Rush: This Indian Pale Ale has a unique blend of citrus and pine that dominate its aroma and flavour. It has a mix of malts and five hops that give Insane Rush its edge. Apart from the gold medal and 90 points, Insane Rush was also crowned the ‘Best Beer by Value’ and the ‘Best Beer by Packaging’ at the 2020 USA Beer Ratings. You would be insane not to try this brilliant beer!

Lush Puppy: Made with a massive amount of hops, Lush Puppy has a citrusy flavour and aroma that dominates and makes it a very tropical beer to have. At 6.3% ABV and 40 IBU’s, Lush Puppy was awarded a silver medal with a score of 89 points at the competition. Another juicy IPA to savor.

Stick’s: This American Pale Ale from Bootstrap Brewing is dry-hopped with Mosaic hops which results in it getting a smooth and delicious finish. A gluten-reduced beer just like its contemporaries, Stick’s also has a nice, citrusy flavour. 

Chillax: Infused with real pineapple, Chillax is a golden ale with the subtle and sweet taste of the tropics. A tangy and refreshing beer that can be had all year round, Chillax has an ABV of 4.5% and goes well with some Kenny Chesney.

East of Napa, Left of Center: the Giguiere family embodies Dunnigan Hills winemaking. Matchbook Wine Company is a family-owned winery tucked away in Northern California’s gently rolling Dunnigan Hills.

John and Karl Giguiere are 5th generation farmers who know the region’s soil, climate and true potential of the land. In 1981 they pioneered grape growing in this region when they planted their very first vineyard. By 1993 they’d succeeded in making the Dunnigan Hills a nationally recognized American appellation. The family’s knowledge of the land combined with their curiosity and drive to innovate defines their determination to constantly improve the viticulture and winemaking of the region. Today the family-owned vineyard specializes in the varietals that thrive in the warm Dunnigan Hills climate, while the winery has expanded its portfolio to include wine made from grapes grown in other regions.

Matchbook celebrates the varietals that thrive out in the warm Dunnigan Hills climate. Our wines are always fruited first, with oak flavors a supporting element. The whites are pure, 100% varietal, while the reds are blended in the spirit of complexity and character.

As farm kids growing up in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Giguiere brothers were veritable pyromaniacs, setting numerous things on fire—including the family wheat fields. Fearing total ruin of house and farm, the boys’ father one day left them at the city jail for an hour’s “stay” to impress upon them the dangers of their fascination with fire. But it was to no avail. They soon graduated to launching rockets, which resulted in more uncontrolled blazes and calls to the fire department. Over time, the Giguiere boys outgrew their fascination with the flame. But even today they look at the Matchbook brand with fond memories of the fires they once stoked.

Established in 2012, Papa Moon comes from a name given to Papa, the eldest founder, by his grandchildren after several nights looking at the moon. Jim, or Papa, has always loved the outdoors and growing a wide variety of plants. In 2008 Papa planted the first grapevines on the farm. The acres of grapes slowly grew over the years and natural expansion into cider took place several years later. Papa Moon now does half cider and half wine in their facility and focuses on niche products and blends that are not commonly found in storefronts. We are trying to give the craft industry its pride back where things are actually done by hand, with thoughtful intentions & passion, no investors or interests other than making awesome beverages and utilizing local ingredients and people not because of bottom-line but because that’s what craft should be.

Jim Massey – Owner and operator and the “Papa” Jim fills in the gaps when needed in the production area and tasting room. Jim also handles much of the vineyard work which is still done mostly by hand. His true passion is the outdoor work in the cider and wine garden and maintaining the farm.

Katlyn Massey – Katlyn is the event coordinator, distribution manager as well as head tasting room manager at our local tasting room. Katlyn brings a wonderful female touch to the brand. She can do it all and often ends up helping on canning day, setting up for events all while serving in the tasting room.

Trevor Massey – Owner-  Trevor started at the winery as the winemaker and our chief chemist. He found a true passion for programming and computers and has stepped away from some of the winemaking duties to manage the website, build out custom programs for data management and logistics. Self-taught, Trevor handles anything digital and really is the key pillar to the functionality of the cidery. Trevor also manages all accounting and legal. Trevor also works a full-time job “in town”.

Ryan Massey-  Owner – Ryan was an apprentice under Trevor in the beginning days of the winery. A few years ago Ryan, who is also self-taught,  took over most winery and cider making in the winery. Ryan also does some of the label and graphic design which is pretty plain and simple. Ryan also has a full-time job working “in town”.

Barbie Sullivan – Is Mrs. Moon. Barbie is a large contributor to creativity and a positive attitude that we all turn to for insight and support. Barbie helps with all the jobs on the farm and in the production facility when she is not working her 1st job.

Leah Massey – Leah helps with many jobs around the facility. She also provides creative support.

The Famous is a craft cocktail lounge with a rich LA history. Located in Glendale’s historic Huntley Evans, the interior of the pub symbolizes old Los Angeles. The moment you step inside you will be transported to an old Hollywood film. Inside this historic wood-and-brick structure, the interior is furnished entirely with wood and leather, and exposed brick walls project stills from vintage movies. You can also have some of their obscure liquor brands that are served by vested and mutton-chopped bartenders who are sincerely enthusiastic about their craft. Just imagine Hollywood minus the pretension!

Cocktails served at The Famous are similar to the ones that were served almost 100 years ago when the building was constructed. The extensive specialty cocktail and seasonal drink menus are complemented by a large and ever-changing “R&D” menu and draft beer choices. The Famous offers classic cocktails made with fresh ingredients, bitters, juices, syrups, and infusions. The tiki bar is one of the greatest achievements of society, and Los Angeles is home to the Mona Lisa of them all. Tiki Ti, located in a glorified lean-to in Los Feliz that’s hardly bigger than a Honda Accord, is where you visit when you want to party. The crowd is mostly the regulars who have been there since the 80s. You will see a mechanical toy bull that walks along the bar, and two of those cocktails will put you under the table. 

If you want to taste some of the most delicious tropical cocktails Tiki Ti is the place for you! You must definitely taste the Tiki Ti original cocktail- Bayanihan and it is people’s favorite. This cocktail means “togetherness” or “friendship” in the Filipino language. It is their twist on Pina Colada. The refreshing cocktail is made from lime, passion, coconut, pineapple, and amber rum. They also have other delicious cocktails on their menu like the Blood & Sand, Bloody Tiki, Chi Chi, and many more. All of them taste amazing and are popular among the crowd. Irish Coffee is a cocktail that was created to warm up travellers in Ireland in the 1940’s. Chef Joe Sheridan, who worked at the airport’s restaurant, was asked by a group of American passengers to make them something comforting in the cold weather. He added Irish whiskey to their coffee and topped it off with whipped cream. Voila! The warmth of the coffee combined with the richness of the Irish whiskey and the creaminess of the whipped cream make this cocktail a delicious treat on a chilly day. 

That was the birth of the cocktail so perfect, it has a largely unchanged recipe over all the years.  

Ingredients ? 1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee, 1-2 teaspoons brown sugar (or to taste), 1 1/2 oz Irish whiskey and Heavy cream.

Its a stirred drink, and can simply be built up in the iconic Irish Coffee glass. 

Pro Tip : Using the back of a spoon, gently pour the whipped cream over the back of the spoon onto the top of the coffee. This will help the cream float on top of the coffee. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired.

Today, Irish coffee is enjoyed all over the world and is considered a classic cocktail. Irish coffee is a classic cocktail that’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day, or any other time you’re in the mood for a warm and cozy drink. 

However, it goes without saying, the true differentiating mark between an Irish Coffee and a GREAT Irish Coffee is the whiskey that is used.

Launched in 2016 by two school friends James Kindred and Rob Fink, Big Drop Brewing Co. is a beer producing company promoting the message of ‘To Drink. Not to be Drunk.’ The idea to launch this brand stemmed from two major reasons, the first being a change in lifestyle owing to fatherhood and the second being the lack of good alcohol-free beer options in the market. As they found it increasingly difficult to have a beer that contained little to no alcohol, they decided to take matters into their own hands and thus the Big Drop Brewing Co. came about.

Having an idea and actualizing it are two different things. James and Rob knew from the start that to make Big Drop Brewing Co. a success, they would need a great brewer by their side, one who could make the beer taste just as good as the rest of them in the market sans the alcohol. Thus, to bring this idea of alcohol-free beer option to fruition, Rob Fink and James Kindred roped in renowned experimental brewer Johnny Clayton for their project. 

Through the years they have perfected the technique of brewing alcohol-free craft beer without compromising on the taste. They now have in production a variety of beers with no more than 0.5% ABV. At the 2020 USA Beer Ratings, three of Big Drop Brewing Co.’s beers were among the medal winners. 

Pine Trail Pale Ale: This double award-winning Pale Ale contains barley, wheat, yeast, and lactose (milk) with the hops being magnum, mosaic, and Amarillo. As soon as you pour the beer, rosy floral aromas are evident and the palate has a lime citrus bite. There is bitterness at the finish. The Pine Trail Pale Ale was awarded 92 points by the judges which brought the beer a gold medal and a Best in Show by Country award as well.

Galactic Milk Stout: James and Rob wanted to take the notion away from the people about a good stout having had its day with the people. To bring back the glory to this wonderful beer variant, they introduced the Galactic Milk Stout, an alcohol-free stout that tastes like a honeycomb covered in chocolate. Containing cocoa nibs, barley, oats, rye, and hops of brambling cross, the Galactic Stout scored 86 points and took home a silver medal at the 2020 USA Beer Ratings. 

Uptown Craft Lager: Another wonderfully elegant craft lager coming from the house of Big Drop Brewing Co. is the Uptown Craft Lager which was also awarded a silver medal at the competition for their tally of 80 points. Full of floral hops and aromas with a hint of caramel and pepper spiciness, the Uptown Craft Lager is one you can enjoy on a great summer day as you chill with a game on your TV screens. The lager containing magnum and Hallertau hersbrucker hops has a nice palate that ends on an orange note. 

For a company that came to existence on the back of a mission of providing beers to drink but not ones that get people drunk, Big Drop Brewing Co. in just over four years of operation has fulfilled its mission by creating 0.5% ABV versions of a stout, lager, pale ale, golden ale, IPA, brown ale, winter ale, and a sour beer.

Their vision was always to create beers that people could enjoy without worrying about the numbers in case the alcohol content was a bit too much. From what was once just an idea, Big Drop Brewing Co. has become a market leader and a hero of the non-alcoholic beer brand segment, so much so that in just a small time of business, they got a call from the third-largest buyer of beer, Swedish state-owned Systembolaget.

Three Weavers Brewing, owned by Lynne Weaver, is an Inglewood icon that has just expanded with a 20,000-square-foot beer garden. The brewery is well-known not just for its craft beers, but also for its dedication to kindness, humility, and community.

You can also visit the Three Weavers tasting room as it is the heart and soul of the brewery. It is the place to gather with friends and family and truly be part of our community. In fact, they recently made history by hiring Los Angeles’ first female brewmaster. Recently they even released their Blursday, a 5.5% ABV Rosé Sour. You will get the beer in Three Weavers’ Inglewood taproom and at select California craft beer sellers.
