Emerging from the pinnacle Reserve series of Shottesbrooke’s wine range, the ‘Eliza’ Shiraz has the majestic grandeur of a high quality wine. With the potential to age into an outstanding wine from a great one, the ‘Eliza’ Shiraz took home the Wine of the Year, Best in Show by country (Australia), and Best in Show by varietal awards at the 2021 USA Wine Ratings.
With a stellar 97 points in the USA Wine Ratings, the Shottesbrooke Reserve Series ‘Eliza’ Shiraz is certainly the one to top your wine list. Rated highly by Masters of Wine, retail trade buyers and top sommeliers in the U.S., the ‘Eliza’ Shiraz will grace your home bar with elegance.
Wines at the USA Wine Ratings are judged on three criterias – quality, value, and packaging. In order to excel at the awards, a wine must achieve a high score in each category. For quality, factors such as taste, aroma, body, and aftertaste contribute towards assessing the composition and drinkability of the wine. The value score is determined by how the wine is priced in relation to its quality, and the packing takes into account the label, bottle shape, bottle color, and closure. Grabbing a medal at the USA Wine Ratings demands excellence from winemakers, not just what’s within the bottle, but also what’s on it.

This year, the competition recorded over 1000 entries and 12 Masters of Wine came together at the judging panel. Judges at the USA Wine Ratings comprise top level wine buyers (retailers, wholesalers and distributors), Masters of Wine, sommeliers and other experts from the wine industry. Some notable mentions from this year’s judging panel include Tim Marson (Master of Wine), Eduardo Dingler (Vice President at Wine Access), Tim Widnes (Wine and Beer buyer, Whole Foods Market), Olga Crawford (Master of Wine), Henry Brimo (wine category manager at Southeastern Grocers), Ashley Hausman (Master of Wine and Sommelier at Mistral Wine School), Tim Hanni (USA’s first Master of Wine), and more.
Reserve Series
Products from the Reserve series make their way into the market only once they reach maturity. Named in recognition of one of its pioneers, the ‘Eliza’ Shiraz comes to life by way of quality grapes that ripen in ideal conditions. Then, the fruit is crushed and destemmed, left to ferment the skin in temperatures ranging between 22-25°C, until pressed against high grade American oak hogsheads. The wine has a full-bodied palate with rich blueberry, dried plums, bramble, bing cherries, toasted wood spice, and light coffee notes. The nose presents brooding dark fruit aromas and savory, spice oak. The ‘Eliza’ Shiraz has a deep red color with a lively purple hue, pairing well with braised beef cheeks, roasted baby carrots, and creamy mashed potato.

Other wines from the Reserve series are the ‘Punch’ Cabernet Sauvignon and ‘The Proprietor’ Blend. All wines from the reserve range are only released after years of exceptional quality.

A tale of origin
The Shottesbrooke Vineyards were founded by Nick Homes who planted his first vineyard in Myponga, a small South Australian hamlet. After discovering the quality of the fruit he produced in 1981, Homes expanded his gardens in McLaren Vale, not long before constructing the Shottesbrooke winery and cellar door.
McLaren-grown grapes and their capability to make high quality wine was a revelation. At the same time, Nick’s step-son, Hamish Maguire started following his footsteps to excel in premium winemaking. He completed his graduation in science and business from the Adelaide University in 1993 and ventured into mastering the details of winemaking with Ryecroft Wines on the McLaren Flat. To continue his journey of learning, Hamish spent three years in Spain, France, England, and New York where he worked as a wine representative.

To this day, Hamish has played an integral part in carrying on his step-father’s legacy in making Shottesbrooke a premium wine brand. As the general manager and chief winemaker, Hamish has expanded Shottesbrooke Vineyards’ storage capacity to one million liters with an annual crush hold of around 1200 tons. The Shottesbrooke have already made a name as Australia’s best premium winemakers and now look to conquer the international market.

Watermelon Prosecco Sorbet Slushie
Recipe by BBC Good Food
Perfect to sip during hot summer afternoons, the Watermelon Prosecco Sorbet Slushie is a mix of sweet watermelon juices, creamy apples and pears and zesty lemon. The Maschio dei Cavalieri Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG throws elderflower, honeyed brioche, and melon aromas to the palate.
1 watermelon (about 2kg)
200ml prosecco (try the gold winner Maschio dei Cavalieri Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG) 3 mint sprigs, plus extra to serve ½ lemon, zest pared
50g sugar
Cut the watermelon into quarters and remove the pips using a teaspoon. If you’re serving the same day or next day, keep six wedges or slices back for decorating and chill. Cut the flesh into 3cm cubes (you should have about 1kg fruit, with the rind discarded) and sit in a baking parchment-lined container where the cubes fit snugly. Pour the prosecco over the fruit, cover and freeze for 4 hrs, or up to 1 week.
Put the mint, lemon and sugar in a small pan with 50ml water, and bring to a gentle simmer for 3-5 mins until the sugar dissolves and turns syrupy. Cover and leave to cool completely, then strain.
Put the frozen prosecco-soaked watermelon cubes in a food processor with the sugar syrup. Blend well, stopping and pushing the mixture towards the blades with a spatula every few seconds, if you need to, until it’s a slushy consistency. Add a splash of prosecco to make a smooth slush. Spoon or pour into six chilled glasses. Garnish with the chilled watermelon wedges and little mint sprigs.

According to a report published by MJBiz Daily, sales of cannabis-infused beverages were up by 40% in 2020. Cannabis-infused beverages are a great segue into the world of Mary J, especially for those who want to avoid the ‘smoking’ part. From RTDs to cocktail bases, we’ve pulled out some of the most sought-after cannabis beverage brands making a mark in the widespread canna world.
Tweed
Tweed’s Non-alcoholic Cannabis-infused drinks
Tweed is Canada’s leading source for all things cannabis. Recently they launched a new product line for cannabis-infused beverages. The tweed’s RTD comes in three flavors: ‘Penelope and Tonic’, ‘Bakerstreet and Ginger’, and ‘Houndstooth and Soda’. All of them are infused with natural and botanical flavors and each can contains 2 mg of THC. The Penelope and Tonic also contain 1.5 mg of CBD. Tweed claims that it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours for you to feel the effects of their cannabis drinks. These effects can last up to 12 hours, but some may last as long as 24 hours, so they recommend to start low and go slow.
Artet, a family-run brand, is home to three cannabis-infused beverages, each one being non-alcoholic, gently-dosed, and versatile. All the drinks taste great by themselves, but if you’re looking for something off-the-rack, then you can always whip up one of their many cocktails.
Flagship Bottle: The only bottle on their list of products, The Flagship Bottle is a cannabis aperitif made with a blend of botanicals like cardamom, allspice, ginger, chamomile, juniper, gentian, and grapefruit. Sip on it neat or on the rocks.
Rosemary Jane: Created by chance at a barbeque in Los Angeles, the Rosemary Jane became such a favorite out there that Artet turned it into a RTD can. The drink is a refreshing mix of Italian grapefruit juice, rosemary simple syrup, and sparkling water; ideal for the summer.
Tet & Tonic: An ode to the timeless G&T with a cannabis twist. This RTD has flavors of quinine, sage, chamomile, and lemon.

Rawsonville, located in a scenic portion of the Breede River Valley on the eastern flanks of Du Toitskloof mountains is a small wine growing region of South Africa. This small portion of the Western Cape province shone at the recently concluded USA Wine Ratings. Du Toitskloof Wines from Rawsonville took home ten awards at the competition including the Best Wine by Packaging award that was conferred to Quest One wine.
Du Toitskloof Wines was established as a co-operative by six farmers in 1962. They began their journey as a bulk-wine producer but in the early 1990s began shifting their focus to the bottled wine market. It was a move that changed the winery’s course as they soon cultivated a reputation as a progressive brand and one that constantly delivers a product of utmost quality.
This reputation was enhanced even more nearly 30 years after their change to a bottled wine producer at the 2021 USA Wine Ratings. The USA Wine Ratings singles out and shines a spotlight on wines that excel in the quality they offer to the drinker. To earn a place on a retailer’s shelf or a restaurant’s wine list, these wines have to impress judges on the criteria of quality, value and money.
The judges at the competition are chosen from an elite list of retail wine buyers, Masters of Wine, sommeliers and experts who lead retail chains, and have a direct commercial buying responsibility. This year’s edition saw an impressive 12 Masters of Wine under one roof. Among those judges were Tim Hanni MW (USA’s first Master of Wine); Tim Marson MW (Senior Buyer at Wine.com) and Pat Andress (Wine Product Developer, Trader Joe’s Company). They judged wine submissions from over 100 varietals spanning over 1000 entries and only 134 of these wines won gold medals. In what was a very tough judging process, Du Toitskloof Wines’ Quest One rose above the other entries to win the Best Wine by Packaging award, one of the three judging criterias of the competition.
While the Quest One was the headlining wine, there were seven other wines from Du Toitskloof Wines, that were also among the winners at the 2021 USA Wine Ratings.
Quest One
The wine has to be something special to impress the judges such that it is awarded two special category medals. The Quest One from Du Toitskloof Wines took home the Best Wine by Packaging and Best Wine by Country awards at the 2021 USA Wine Ratings. These special awards came on the back of its score of 93 points and a gold medal. The Quest One is a spicy red flowing with juicy bright bing cherries, plums, blackberries with toasted wood and some light vanilla.
On the palate, there is a good balance of soft tannins and ripe fruit with the mouthfeel oozing with a complexity of rich floral flavors. Quest One can be enjoyed with a rich oxtail potjie or a hearty beef stroganoff with porcini mushrooms. South Africa’s best wine is a remarkable expression of a top-quality blend of Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Quest Old Vine Chenin Blanc
Following closely on the heels of the Quest One was the Quest Old Vine Chenin Blanc, which was awarded a gold medal at the competition with a score of 90 points. The Chenin Blanc can be identified at the nose from its distinctive floral notes and aromas of dried peach, citrus and lime. The wine, while respecting the fruit, shows elegant and delicate tannins. Slightly complex on the palate with subtle flavors, the Quest Old Vine Chenin Blanc is ideal to be paired with rich fishcakes and baby potatoes, or pork chops with crispy fat, or an apple and walnut salad.

The southernmost tip of South Africa is Cape Agulhas, a place where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean merge. Du Toitskloof Wines have brought the diversity of this incredible place in a bottle with the Land’s End Cape Agulhas Syrah. The wine scored 89 points at the 2021 USA Wine Ratings and was awarded a silver medal. The deep ruby-purple Syrah has aromas of black cherry, spice, truffle and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose. Its velvety palate shows flavors of plum, apricot and boysenberry with a hint of smokiness. Dishes like the braised chicken and garlic sweet potatoes, grilled meat or roasted beetroot are elevated when paired with this wine.
Quest Two
Coriander, lavender, white pepper with some floral notes define the nose of the 82 points scoring silver medal winner Quest Two. Oak undertones and sweet ripe tannins brilliantly support the wine’s silky mouthfeel. The dried herbs and ripe fruit palate goes well with robust roast dishes like a lamb made over an open fire with oven-grilled veggies. The Rhône Style Syrah was another fine representative of the Du Toitskloof brand.
Land’s End Cape South Coast Sauvignon Blanc
The third silver medal winner from Du Toitskloof Wines was the Land’s End Cape South Coast Sauvignon Blanc. The 81 points scoring Sauvignon Blanc opens with a bouquet of wild tropical fruit, intermingled with hints of flint and freshly picked herbs. The palate has a seamless blend of candied orange, citrus, ripe kiwi fruit and Cape gooseberry. The well-integrated freshness and fruit forward finish of the wine can be enjoyed with crayfish, oysters, or asparagus spears.

The two Sauvignon Blancs on show from the South African brand both scored 81 points at the competition. The second of those two wines was the Du Toitskloof Old Vine Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has an intense complexity and a broad palate with warm, spicy notes. Tropical fruits such as kiwi and guava make an impression on the palate of a wine that delivers a cacophony of flavors.
Land’s End Cape South Coast Shiraz
The third Land’s End wine to win from Du Toitskloof Wines, the Land’s End Cape South Coast Shiraz was also a silver medal winner for its tally of 80 points. Black cherry, sandalwood and truffle notes dominate the nose which also shows hints of beetroot. The soft, velvety palate consists of flavors like plum and cherries. The wine is enjoyed best with roasted leg of lamb, grilled vegetables or aged hard cheeses.
Du Toitskloof Dimension
Finishing off the list of winners from Du Toitskloof Wines was the Du Toitskloof Dimension. The 2017 vintage traces its origins to the Western Cape and is dark in color with a lovely pomegranate hue. Aromas of prune, dark berries, chocolate and cassis make up the nose. The palate is firm and has a spicy blend of flavors that end in a long and graceful finish.

From generations of old family recipes, noted Jamaican spirits experts Leo and Dawn Gonsalves, have carefully crafted the award-winning Rude Bwoy Spirits lineup which consists of three all-natural, ultra-premium rums including a white, gold, and coconut rum. In addition, Rude Bwoy also features a very unique sugarcane-based vodka.
Each of the Rude Bwoy offerings is handcrafted and 100% natural and produced in their Florida distillery.
In a recent Caribbean Journal feature article, Rude Bwoy Ultra Premium Coconut Rum was described as “most coconut rums have that unwelcome veneer of artifice; this doesn’t – it tastes real, it tastes fresh and authentic and even a bit complex.” The article goes on to say, “plainly, it’s the best coconut rum we’ve tried in a long time.” They encourage you to taste the experience for yourself.
The story
Rudy Bwoy Spirits’ story begins on the Caribbean island of Jamaica, in the West Indies, back in the 1600s with the Wright family. The Wrights were living on the south side of the island in the parish of St. Elizabeth in a town named after the family. At the time, Wright Town stretched from the hills of Spur Tree to the beaches of Treasure Beach and Newell. The Wrights were serial entrepreneurs selling cattle and grew peanuts, onions, melons, and scallion, and of course sugar.
The earliest Wrights are documented to be those who appear on the 1684 map of the east bank of Rio Minho and were sugar and Indigo producers. In the late 17th C, indigo was a rare and valuable dye and was one of the first export crops grown in Jamaica. In 1670, their ancestors are on record as buying 100 acres of sugar plantation land. Due to Tax changes on Indigo, the crops on the island shifted more towards sugar and the Wrights were said to have purchased more land all the way down to Black River and Savanna La Mar.
The Cuba Connection
In the 1740s the British made Jamaica into the world’s main sugar producer. Since then, Jamaican history has been filled with stories of large sugar plantations, giant homes with slaves working long hours in the sugar cane fields cutting and stripping cane to make Rum. One of the lesser-known things about Jamaica was that while in other parts of the world, slavery was the norm, however, in Jamaica, many of the plantation owners were in fact people of color who did not own slaves. Back then, the Plantations ran the show. However, down in the southern part of the island, the Wrights were humbly farming away.
The distillery’s more recent Jamaican family were livestock farmers. Their grandfather was a cattleman and sold crops from his property as one of the best salesmen in the area. It was here that the idea to start producing rum formed.
The Wrights were humble people who worked the sugar and cattle to sustain their families. When opportunities for better pay came to Jamaicans by the building of Cuba’s railroads, some of the elder Wrights headed off to Cuba. The Wrights that went to Cuba tried hard to stay in connection with their Jamaican family however back then communication was very thin. Over time, the family spread out, some going to other countries such as England, Costa Rica, and to America. It wasn’t for over a century later that Cuba’s revolution was at the forefront of the world… bringing rum right along with it.
Jamaica and Cuba have since remained connected in many ways. In the early 1970s when diplomatic ties were strong, Cuba sent doctors, nurses, teachers, and engineers to Jamaica in an offer to better the country. So, the Wright family also sent back something from Cuba to Jamaica- the love for high-quality rum and some techniques for making it.
Having lived thru the roots reggae days of the ’80s and the Dancehall days in Jamaica of the 1990s, the Rude Bwoy spirit bubbled into fruition and over the course of time, the brand was born. Rude Bwoy Spirits begun being crafted in Tampa at a small distillery and over the next four years, the tastes and notes were (as they would say in Jamaica) “twisted and bent up” thru trial and error until the taste of the “Old Days” was in every drop. It was time for the world to see that Rude Bwoy Spirits was here and it was time for the brand to be taken nationally. From this passion to bring the world the best coconut rum, and specialized sugar cane vodka, as well as the smoothest white and gold rums, Island in a Bottle, LLC was created and operates today as the brand’s management, sales, and marketing arm.
The range:
Ultra Premium Rude Bwoy Coconut Rum
Ultra Premium Rude Bwoy Vodka
Both the products recently won a silver medal at the 2020 Bartender Spirits Competition where leading bartenders of the USA judge the spirits.
